Nicole Charbonnet

Nicole Charbonnet’s mixed media paintings incorporate texture, images, and words to create visual thresholds revealing visions of pop culture. Addressing cultural memory, Charbonnet conjures images from Westerns and Film Noir. She specifically uses American stereotypes of cowboys, horses, and desert highways as an exploration of past and present perceptions of ourselves. The artist states, “I believe that our language, whether visually verbal doesn’t merely describe identity, but actually produces moral and perhaps even physical identity and is precisely the very possibility of change, the space that can serve as a springboard for thought, the precursory movement of a transformation of social and cultural structures.”This new series of large-scale paintings will be on view through the month of March.
